Magazine & Newspaper Articles

A few samples of my work.

In fall of 2006, I did a simple summary info article for UP Magazine (Porcupine

Press) in 2006. Photos were taken by Robin Lindenberg, UP Mag’s art director. At the time I was still working full time as an advertising account executive for a local newspaper, which gave me to freelance but with insisted I use a pen. So, byline is me, Susan Sturtz.

For the past two years I’ve been helping my fabulous husband, Chef Dennis, prepare his monthly You Can Cuisine article that’s published in UP Magazine.  I help plan the schedule of recipes, set-up the shot, take the photos, and write the final article from his recipes and draft notes. It’s very much a collaborative effort.  I picked this article to showcase because the dish is a personal favorite of mine, not to mention the first meal Dennis ever cooked for me.

Hosted by a tiny town along Saginaw Bay in the top of Michigan’s “Thumb”, the Cheeseburger in Caseville Festival is a popular annual summer attraction.  In addition to selling all but one of the local ads, I was privileged to write an overview of the festivities for the Caseville Chamber that was published in a special section of UP Magazine,  by Porcupine Press.

Finding The Time to Write is an article I did for Kinderbook newsletter in 1988. The topic is still a popular one when talking with writers and giving seminars and workshops.  Click for article pdf:  Finding The Time To Write, article featured in Kinderbook

For many years I was a news and feature stringer, reporter and editor for several local newspapers.  In the 1970s everything was still old-fashioned newsprint, with typewritten copy transformed into printouts, waxed and hand-pasted onto copy-boards. When crunched at deadline time, I occasionally helped with that process, too.  Here’s an article from Sanilac County News: Sod Farmer Wins (?) Pollution Battle
